Blu Ray Discs
Standard DVDs hold about 20 minutes or so of HD
quality movie. A new
higher capacity DVD format had to be created so that a feature length
movie could fit on a single disc. Two separate formats have
emerged. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are
competing formats for High Definition DVD's. Some movies are out on
HD-DVD or Blu-Ray. Blu Ray discs are capable of
holding up to 50 gigabytes of storage. A standard
DVD can hold 4.7 -8.4 gigabytes.
Blu-Ray has a huge company following, but HD-DVD
players are a lot cheaper and mor readily available. X-box has decided to use HD-DVD as its
player of choice and Play Station has selected Blu
Ray. Some companies have backed one format and other
companies have backed the other.
The companies that have chosen to back Blu Ray
are called the BluRay Disc Association. They include
Apple, Fox, Walt Disney, Sharp, Sony, and Samsung
among many others.
backed HD-DVD include
HP, Intel, Microsoft, Paramount, Toshiba, Universal,
HBO, and Warner Brothers. Naturally the studios that
back HD-DVD are going to release their movies on
HD-DVD and vice versa for Blu Ray. Below are some
links on places to buy HD-DVD's and some sites that
